RANIKHET
:- (1869 MT) This beautiful hill resort is about 63
km from Nainital. Its beauty lies in its simplicity - beautiful
pine trees create a nostalgic feeling. The orchards, the temples,
the joy grounds will back on you again and again to its fold.
Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town in Almora district
in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the home for the
Kumaon Regiment (KRC) & Naga Regiment and is maintained by
the Indian Army. Ranikhet is within sight of the western
peaks of the Himalayas.
Geography
of Ranikhet
Ranikhet is located at 29.65° N 79.42° E. It has an average
elevation of 1,869 m (6,132 ft). The cantonment is spread
across two ridges, first called the Ranikhet ridge is situated
at an elevation of 5,983 ft. and the second, the Chaubattia
ridge, is at an elevation of 6,942 ft. one beautiful village
Thakulari is located in Ranikhet ramnagar motor marg. The
Thakulari district from ranikhet 45 km. near of godi gate.

Himalays. Ranikhet meaning (Queen's Field) was named after a
legendary Queen who camped in the area and fell in love with
it, the town provides a spectacular view of the Himalayan range.
Ranikhet is still a military cantonment and the Kumaon Regiment
has been stationed there from 1780. This is a General view of

History
of Ranikhet
Ranikhet, which means Queen's meadow in Hindi, gets its name
from a local legend, which states that it was here, that Raja
Sudhardev won the heart of his queen, Rani Padmini, who subsequently
chose the area for her residence, giving it the name, Ranikhet,
though no palace exists in the area. In 1869, the British
established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here and
used the station as a retreat from the heat of the Indian
summer. At one time during British Raj, it was also proposed
as the summer headquarters of Government of India, in lieu
of Shimla. In 1900, it had a summer population of 7,705, and
its corresponding winter population was measured in 1901 as
3,153

Club built by the Britishers which is more than a century
ago.
A nature lover's paradise, Ranikhet offers wonderful views
of the Western Himalayas. Ranikhet also presents stunning
view of the Nanda Devi.
Places
to Visit in Ranikhet
There are a number of tourist attractions in Ranikhet that
tourists can visit. Ranikhet is popular for two of its temples.
Jhoola Devi Ka Mandir was constructed some 400 years ago in
honor of the local Goddess, who protected the people from
man-eating tigers. The other important temple is Kali Devi
ka Mandir, which has a large number of bells. The site of
the temple is believed to be 5000 years old.
Chaubatia
Gardens :- It is situated 10 kms from Ranikhet and is
renowned for apple orchards. Ranikhet is popular for its luscious
apples, apricots, peaches and various alpine fruits. Apart
from fruits one can buy fresh juices and honey from Chaubatia
Gardens. Picturesque views of the snow capped peaks of the
mighty Himalayan range can be seen from Chaubatia Gardens.

Binsar
Mahadev Temple :- was built around 9-10 century A.D. It
is Believed that this temple was built in a single day. Ladies
comes here on Vaikunth chaturdashi and light a lamp on their
palm to fulfill the desire of child. Binsar Mahadev is located
19 km from Ranikhet. The temple is surrounded by thick deodar
forests and lies at an altitude of 2480 metres.
With idols of Ganesh, Har Gauri and Maheshmardini in its sanctum
the temple is known for its architectural finesse. The idol
of Maheshmardini is engraved with texts in ' Nagarilipi '
which dates back to as early as the 9th century. Built by
King Pithu in memory of his father Bindu, the place is also
known as Bindeshwar temple.
It sees a large gathering of devotees on the occasion of Baikunth
Chaturdashi in the month of June. It is said that devotees,
especially women, pray all night with lamps in their hands
on this day for the Lord’s blessings.
Binsar Mahadev is famous for its Archealogical significance
and its dense forest which is full of flora and fuana. It
is beleived that desire of a child is fulfill here.
Katarmal
Sun Temple :- Katarmal Sun Temple is at an altitude of
2116 mt, built in the 9th century Katarmal nearby Almora has
the Second important Sun temple in the country, the first
Sun temple being the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa. around 70
kms away from Nainital. This temple complex has one main temple,
surrounded by 45 smaller shrines. The Katarmal Sun Temple
is a monument of historical importance. The Katarmal Sun temple,
noted for its magnificent architecture, artistically made
stone and metallic sculptures and beautifully carved pillars
and wooden doors, the image of Surya in the temple dates back
to 12th century. The Katarmal Sun temple has some unique architectural
style and the images carved on the walls are very intricately
done. Though amidst ruins, it still stands as a major point
of attraction in the region and many devotees visit here to
offer prayer to the Sun God. Situated 25 kms from Ranikhet
this historical temple is an example of intricate sculpturing.
Jhula
Devi Temple :- Built in the 8th century, Jhula Devi Temple
is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The people of Uttaranchal have
strong belief in the Jhula Devi Temple and numerous bells
are hung in the temple. Ram Mandir is situated very close
to Jhula Devi Mandir.
Golf
Course :- Ranikhet Golf Course is one of the highest golf
courses of Asia. Ranikhet Golf Course is a 9-hole course making
it one of the prime attractions of Ranikhet. The green meadow
of the golf course at such high altitude is awe-inspiring.
The golf club provides membership plans for outsiders as well.
Haidakhan
Temple :- Situated 4kms from Ranikhet, Haidakhan Temple
is dedicated to Lord Shiva made by Shri Haidakhan Maharaj
who is said to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The splendid
views of the gigantic Himalayan peaks are clearly visible
from Haidakhan Temple.
Syalikhet
:- It is a scenic spot with unparallel beauty situated
at a distance of 25kms from Ranikhet. Syalikhet is located
in the amidst green forest and apple orchards. The famous
temple of Syahi Devi is situated in Syalikhet.
Bhalu
Dam :- It is an artificial small lake blessed with natural
beauteousness, panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountains
and placid surroundings. The small but beautiful garden nearby
the dam is marvelous. The dam site is open for all the tourists
throughout the year. The views of the massive Himalayan peaks
are enchanting and ravishing from Bhalu Dam. It is an ideal
spot for camping and picnicking.
KRC
(Kumaon Regimental Centre) Museum :- KRC Museum was established
in the 1970s, this Regiment Museum showcases the history of
Kumaon and Garhwal regiments. It also displays valuable treasures
like Rani Jhasi's silver scepter, Chinese rifles from the
1962 war, a World War-II Japanese wireless field telephone
and documents related to the Kargil War.
Climate
- Weather of Ranikhet
Ranikhet becomes very cold in the winters and remains moderate
in summers, and is best enjoyed from March to October. Ranikhet
gets snowfall in the winter season, mainly in the months of
December, January and February.

The reserve forests of Pine, Oak and Deodar in Ranikhet, host
a vast bio-diversity of flora and fauna, its array of wildlife
include, Leopard, Leopard Cat, Mountain Goat, Barking Deer,

Jackal, Langur, Red Fox, and Porcupine
