Kathgodam :- "The Gateway of Kumaon Hills" is situated at the
foothills of Himalayas in Nainital District, is the terminus
of the broad gauge line of North East Railways connecting Nainital
with Delhi, Dehradun & Howarah line from Bareilly.
The Distance from Kathgodam to Nainital is 35 km and
6 km is immediately north of Haldwani. Kathgodam is considered
the twin city of Haldwani and the beauty of Uttarakhand reflects
in the small town of Kathgodam.
Geography of Kathgodam
Kathgodam is one of the most picturesque locations situated
in the Bhabhar region, the foothills of Kumaon Himalayas. Kathgodam
is located at 29.27°N 79.53°E. It has an average elevation of
554 metres (1,483 feet). It is situated on the banks of the
Gaula river (Gaula River is approximately 500 kilometers long.
It originates in the Sattal lakes, and flows south past Kathgodam)
History of Kathgodam
Kathgodam means Kath = wood and Godam = depot, timber depot
the importance of this place grew rapidly after it was brought
on the Railway map of British India in 1909 and in the early
1900s it was a hamlet with less than 400 people. It grew to
be a stop over town, when railways were laid down in the early
19th century by the british.
In 1942, the Haldwani - Kathgodam Municipal Council was founded
and is still the second largest Municipal Council in the state
after Haridwar. The railway line was extended to Haldwani in
1884 and even today, it is the last railway station to Kumaon
region and is the base station for visiting Nainital and other
hills. Tracing the history of this region, the 14th century
Mughal history mentions Gyan Chand belonging to the Chand dynasty,
who was awarded the Bhabhar Terai region till the Ganges River,
from the Delhi Sultanate.
Attractions In Kathgodham :- Temples of Sheetla Devi, Kalichaud,
Hedakhan Ashram and a beautiful dam which is built on the Gaula
river (Gaula Dam - A barrage on this river, known as the Gaula
Barrage, is located at Kathgodam. The barrage is a landmark
for the local residents. It provides irrigation water for the
bhabhar fields.)

Two coaches are attached in Ranikhet express for Dehradun
daily. Bagh Express connects Kathgodam directly to
Howarah via Lucknow. Lalkuan Junction 56 Kms. from
Nainital is another terminal point of meter gauze
line of North East Railways. Nainital Express connects
Lalkuan with Lucknow while Kumaon Express connects
Lalkuan with Agra via Bareilly. Ramnagar 65 Kms. away
acts as an alternative outlet for Delhi & Lucknow.
Train No. 4319/4320 runs in between Kathgodam
and Dehradun bi-weekly, its days from Kathgodam are
Monday & Thursday while from Dehradun days are
Sunday & Wednesday.
Uttarakhand Sampark Kranti Express and Delhi Kathgodam
Express are two important trains connecting Delhi
with Kathgodam.
